ALLENDALE, Mich. - Alex Genuise doesn’t remember his first varsity points.
But the Allendale High School senior will remember his most recent ones.
Genuise reached 1,000 career points on Friday, Feb. 7 against Sparta. He scored 29 points in a 67-54 win.
“It’s a big accomplishment,” Genuise said. “I’ve been looking forward to it since last year. It wasn’t really a goal of mine at first since I was like 600 points away. But I’ve done really well this year and the goal got smaller and smaller.”
The 6-foot-3, 185-pound forward is averaging 26 points per game. He signed to play basketball at Olivet University earlier this week.
“I remember my first varsity game,” Genuise said. “We went into overtime and lost to Reeths-Puffer. But I don’t remember scoring my first points. It was probably a layup.”
That’s because Genuise is known for scoring in the paint. He’s a powerful forward who scores a lot of layups.
But he has incorporated a shot into his game in the past year. He said he has between 25-30 3-pointer this season.
“The first time I started to shoot was AAU last year,” said Genuise, who played for the West Michigan Lakers. “And I shot well. So going into the season I’ve been getting a lot better.”
He said a year ago, he never thought he’d reach 1,000 points.
“At the start of the season, I didn’t think I could,” he said. “(Last season) me and Jacksen (Fitton) went back and forth as high games. But without him I had to step up.”
And now Genuise has reached the milestone for the Falcons (13-5).
“It means a lot to me,” he said.
