Notes for the week of Dec. 26, 2022. Check back daily as this will be updated as news occurs.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Cam Regnerus loves blocking shots.

The 6-foot-7, 205-pound junior from Grandville said he might like blocks more than scoring.

“I love blocking shots,” he said. “It’s rewarding. It gets the student section and the crowd hyped up. It’s fun to do and It’s something I’m good at.”

Regnerus had 9 points, 8 rebounds and 8 blocked shots in loss to Northview on Thursday, Dec. 22 at the Cornerstone Holiday Tournament.

He claims he’s had at least 10 in game for Grandville.

“I think I had 10,” he said. “The stats don’t say it, but I had it. I think I had 12 or 14 in an AAU game (for the West Michigan Future) this summer. It was in Indianapolis.”

Regnerus, one of the most talented big men in West Michigan, is drawing attention from Michigan Colleges. But he only has one offer so far.

“I have an offer from Grand Valley,” he said. “Wayne State was going to come to a practice and I had a visit to Ferris. But that’s about it right now.”

This season, Regnerus is averaging 16 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks per game for the Bulldogs (3-2).

CORNERSTONE: Sophomore Blake Stewart will redshirt this season for the Golden Eagles. The Coopersville grad played four games this season, but shut it down after that. The 6-foot-2 guard will have three years of eligibility left.

EAST KENTWOOD: Sophomore guard Jah Hatchett guarded his AAU teammate Jalen Kampen on Tuesday night when East Kentwood beat Parchment at the Cornerstone Holiday Tournament. The two play for the Grand Rapids Storm. Hatchett had 22 points and Kampen had 16 points.

FERRIS STATE: Nathan Claerbaut, a 6-foot-10 center, will have surgery on an injured hand and will miss a large portion of the season. The redshirt freshman, a Zeeland East grad, is averaging 2.2 points in 11 games.

FRUITPORT CALVARY CHRISTIAN: Sophomore Bradley Richards is putting up big numbers again. He had 40 points and 15 rebounds against Central Lake in the Manistee Catholic Central Christmas Tournament on Thursday. Richards had a 47-point game last season.

GRAND RAPIDS CHRISTIAN: The Eagles were supposed to play this week in the Cornerstone Holiday Tournament. But they didn’t have an opponent. So the went elsewhere. The Eagles played Hamtramck instead in the tournament at Ferndale on Thursday. Hamtramck won the game 62-53 for the Eagles first loss of the season.

JENISON: Jacob Boonyasith, a fifth-year senior at University of Maryland Baltimore County, scored a season-best 19 points against William & Mary on December 18. The Jenison grad is averaging 12.3 points and 3 assists per game. His high school coach was David Kool.

SOUTH CHRISTIAN: The Sailors had an alumni basketball game on Thursday. The varsity team won. But the biggest omission was that David Kool did not play in the game. Kool is the school’s athletic director and a Mr. Basketball winner in his playing days.

TRI-UNITY CHRISTIAN: There were two state champion coaches on the sidelines Tuesday at the Cornerstone Holiday Tournament. Tri-Unity coach Mark Keeler, in his 33rd season, won the Division 4 state title last spring. East Kentwood’s new coach Mike Thomas, was the coach at Grand Blanc in 2021 when his team won the Division 1 title.

ZEELAND EAST: Sophomore BJ Walker scored a career-high 36 points as Zeeland East beat Whitehall 72-55 on Wednesday at the Zeeland Holiday Tournament. He scored 19 more the next day against Coopersville and was named to the all-tournament team.
