Notes for the week of Feb. 6, 2023. Check back daily as this will be updated as news occurs.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Detroit Pistons will be holding a kids camp this summer in Grand Rapids.

The camp for boys and girls grades 3 to 9 and will be held June 26-29 at South Christian High School.

“When I was in 7th grade, I went to a Pistons camp,” South Christian boys basketball coach Taylor Johnson said. “I won a shooting competition and won two tickets to a Pistons game. The director of the camp, Aaron Smith, is a friend now. He’s a director of youth camps for the Pistons and he’s also the coach at Royal Oak.”

So Johnson thought, why not bring a Pistons camp to this side of the state.

“I kept telling him, ‘you’ve got to run a camp on the west side.’ So he’s going to bring a camp over here in the summer. It’s going to be a four-day camp for boys and girls. You can sign up on the South Christian web site. It’s going to be awesome.
The camp is $250. Campers will get a reversible Piston’s jersey and two tickets to a Pistons game game in the 2023-24 season.  More info: https://tinyurl.com/a77u4mvb

BYRON CENTER: Sophomore center Camden Karel had a visit to Western Michigan University on Saturday.

CALVIN UNIVERSITY: Freshman Jalen Overway (Holland Christian) was named MIAA Player of the Week after averaging 28.5 points, 12.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in Calvin wins against Kalamazoo and Olivet. It is the second time Overway has won the award.

CATHOLIC CENTRAL: Junior Durral Brooks is closing in on 1,000 career points. The guard has 949 points, so he’s 51 points from 1,000. Brooks had a career-high 43 points in a game against Wayland on Jan. 17.

CORNERSTONE: The Golden Eagles honored the only two seniors on their roster on Senior Night. Carter Nyp (Wayland) has played five seasons with Cornerstone and is third on the team in scoring with 14.1 points per game. Trent Summerfield (Forest Hills Northern) has played four years and started 23 games and is averaging 4.1 points.

NORTHPOINTE CHRISTIAN: Senior Mitchell White got an offer from Crown College, a Division III team in St. Bonifacius, Minnesota. The 6-foot guard is averaging 18.6 points and 4 assists per game. This is his fourth college offer.

NORTHVIEW: The Wildcats have hit a rough stretch. After starting the season 12-1 and ranked No. 4 in Division 1, Northview has lost three games in a row. First on Friday, Feb. 3, they lost to Lowell 51-50. Apparently several players were under the weather, including one player who was throwing up at halftime. Then the next day, Northview lost to Warren Lincoln 52-37. On Tuesday, the Wildcats lost to East Grand Rapids 54-46 to fall to 12-4 overall. “Our mentality is just that we’ve got to get better,” Northview junior E.J. Ryans said on Saturday. “We need to get back to competing.”

ZEELAND WEST: Junior forward Luke Bakker has been dealing with an ankle injury, which he thought would keep him out for the season. He tried to come back and play on Tuesday. After one minute of play, he scored a bucket and then returned to the bench and did not return. He said he’s hoping to return by the postseason for the Dux.
