Northview’s Brady Swartz scores 50 points to set the school record
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Brady Swartz was on such a role, that he didn’t know how many points he had.
But the Grand Rapids Northview senior ended up with the biggest scoring game in school history when he scored 50 points in a 93-69 win over Wyoming High School on Tuesday night.
“It feels really good,” Swartz said. “My teammates were the ones to get me the ball. It’s pretty cool. I’m happy.”
The crowd went wild once the 6-foot-7 forward scored his 46th point in the fourth quarter.
“It didn’t really feel like I had 50,” Swartz said. “When I had 46 everyone started cheering. Because the school record was 45 points.”
He scored his 50th on a baseline layup and then sat the final four minutes of the game.
Swartz has signed to play basketball at Western Michigan University.
“It’s special,” Northview coach David Chana said. “As a coach, it rarely happens that you have a kid score 50.”
Chana said Swartz wasn’t an overnight sensation. He worked at it.
“People are going to see the 50 points and think he’s always been this good,” Chana said. “His sophomore year, there were times when he couldn’t do anything right. His parents allowed me to push him and they didn’t complain and neither did Brady. This didn’t just happen overnight. he’s worked his butt off. I’m really proud of him for that.”
Junior Cam Ryans had 24 points for Northview.
“I knew I had it in me,” Swartz said. “Cam was a little sick so I knew I had to step up.”
Swartz was 12-of-16 from the free-throw line and he made two 3-pointers. He had 12 points in the first quarter, 13 in the second, 14 in the third and 11 in the fourth. His previous high in a game was 36, which he accomplished twice.
“We didn’t tell him he had the record at that point,” Chana said. “He was genuinely surprised.”
The record of 45 was held by Steve Olson, who held the mark since the early 1970s.
