Jalen Overway scores 42, most by Calvin player since 1993
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Jalen Overway had one of the biggest games in Calvin University history on Saturday.
The 6-foot-10 sophomore scored 42 points in an 89-63 win over Alma College at VanNoord Arena.
It is the first time a Calvin player had reached the 40-point mark since 1993 when Chris Knoester scored 40. And the 42 points is the sixth-best scoring game in school history. The Calvin record is 61 points by Steve Honderd in 1993.
“It felt insane,” Overway said. “It was really cool to have 40. I have had 30 before but 40 was something totally different. It was a special feeling for sure.”
Overway, a grad of Holland Christian High School, was 16-of-27 from the field. He also drained four 3-pointers on four attempts. He also added 13 rebounds.
"He did a great job," Calvin coach Bill Sall told the school website. "He hit some threes today, which was awesome. He can shoot those. Just an efficient game by him.”
Overway, who was named MIAA Player of the Week this past week, is averaging 20.6 points per game. He won the MIAA MVP last season.
Overway’s previous career-high was 34, which he had in the second game of his career. His season-high was 31 against Olivet on Jan. 13.
Overway wasn’t the only Calvin basketball player with a monster game.
Austin Buckley scored 46 points for the Calvin University junior varsity team on Saturday in a win over Alma. The freshman from Byron Center drained six 3-pointers.
