DETROIT, Mich. - Durral Brooks was named Michigan High School Male Athlete of the Year by the Detroit Athletic Club for 2024.

The Grand Rapids Catholic Central senior basketball player was at the award ceremony on Monday.

Brooks won the 2024 Michigan Mr. Basketball Award this season as well.

“I’m very blessed to be here and be nominated for this award,” Brooks told State Champs!

Brooks, who will play basketball at the University of Michigan for new coach Dusty May in the fall, talked about his new team.

“I’m just excited to get out there (to Ann Arbor),” he told Lorne Plant of State Champs! “I’m moving this Thursday. I’m excited to get to know the new team, new coaches and my new family.”

Brooks was asked what his favorite memory from playing at Catholic Central was. He mentioned winning the Division 2 state championship in 2021 when the Cougars beat Battle Creek Pennfield. Catholic Central made to the title game again in 2022 before losing to Williamston.

“Winning the state championship my freshman year,” Brooks said. “Just because that’s the first state championship that the school had ever won in basketball. The year before that, my brother (Jorden Brooks) was on the team. That’s COVID. So they were actually favored to win that year. But they got cut short because of COVID. So coming in and picking up where they left off and actually getting the job done was my biggest memory. That’s what I’ll treasure the most.”

Brooks, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound guard, averaged 27 points and eight rebounds for Catholic Central (20-6) last season.

Lauren Timpf, a golfer from Macomb Lutheran North, won the Female Athlete of the Year.
